The Current carries the boat; songs from 100 years of Finnish pioneering
Finland 100-themed Raahe Music Weeks will open on Saturday the 4th of February, 2017 with magnificent choral music. In honour of this Finnish Independence anniversary year the Kemi mixed choir Ajan Laulu and Raahe Laulutoverit present separately and together over 20 Finnish folk songs followed by Jean Sibelius' Finlandia hymn.
Other composers included are: Aulis Sallinen, Eero Ojanen, Sami Itkonen, Asko Vilén, Toivo Kärki, Mika Vainio and Jukka Kuoppamäki.
The repertoire has familiar 'Blue and white' songs such as: 'Tama taivas, tämä maa' (This sky, this land), 'Yksinäinen saarnipuu' (The lonely Ash tree), 'Hiljainen kylätie' (The quiet village road), 'Laulu oravasta' (Song of the squirrel) and 'Meristä kaunein' (The most beautiful sea).
Ajan Laulu is led by choir master Olavi Suokas, and will be accompanied by Kauko Rantala and the soloist singer Maritta Rahko.
Raahe Laulutoverit is led by Pauli Ylitalo and appearing as soloists are Irene Kallio and Risto Rautio.
The concert music is supplied by Anne-Maria Tokola (piano), Eero Lehtola (accordion), Mika Naapanki (guitar), Matti Rautio (bass) and Jari Uittoluoto (drums).
